Iran’s top clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, has chosen Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader after the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed during military strikes linked to the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric with strong connections to Iran’s political and military establishment, had long been considered a potential successor. His appointment marks a historic moment because power has effectively passed from father to son, something unusual in Iran’s political system since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The new leadership comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East are extremely high, with continuing military exchanges and economic impacts such as rising oil prices. Iranian authorities and military institutions have pledged support for Mojtaba Khamenei as he takes charge during one of the most challenging periods in the country’s recent history.
